Wilderness area of Tasmania at dusk

Western Tiers & Midlands - 2011
Tasmania

Wilderness & public parklands

I often use flash at dusk, but not always. Sometimes showing the darkness as dark seems right, and holding the end of the day also seems right. Perhaps it's a respect for the moment, or the recognition that artificial light can't put a gloss on everything.

Taken in mid-winter, which seemed apt for the sadness that belongs to their making, these pictures are about the passing of a relative and the manner in which we might deal with mortality. They are also about the wonderful indifference of the landscape to our joys and woes. Creating metaphoric connections between nature and human life is reasonable – it's a way of making meaning and giving sense to profound change and the inexplicable.
